Some TurboTax users will soon be getting settlement checks

Some TurboTax users will soon be receiving settlement checks as part of a class-action lawsuit settlement. The lawsuit, which was filed in 2019, alleged that TurboTax had misled customers into paying for services that they could have received for free.

The settlement covers TurboTax customers who paid for the TurboTax Live service between January 12, 2016, and May 28, 2020. The TurboTax Live service allows customers to connect with a tax expert for help with their tax return.

According to the settlement agreement, TurboTax will pay $40 million to eligible customers. The amount of the settlement check will depend on how much the customer paid for the TurboTax Live service during the covered period.

TurboTax has denied any wrongdoing in the case but agreed to settle to avoid the cost and uncertainty of litigation. The settlement was approved by a federal judge in August 2021.

Customers who are eligible for the settlement will receive a notice in the mail with instructions on how to claim their settlement check. The deadline to file a claim is December 17, 2021.

If you are a TurboTax customer who paid for the TurboTax Live service during the covered period, be on the lookout for your settlement notice in the mail. This is a great opportunity to get some money back for services that you may have paid for unnecessarily.
